about us and how we got started

  • My wife and I are hay farmers here in Moses Lake, Wa. One day while surfing the web, I came across "mini cows". We had livestock in the past, but nothing like the little cute things I was looking at on the computer.  We started researching and in the process met Hans and Sheril Peterson, the owners of Lakeport Miniature Highlands in Michigan.  We learned that there was actually a lot that went into producing an actual miniature Highland cow.  Hans and Sheril had already invested 20 years at that time into their herd by selective breeding. They had so much knowledge from their years of experience that I decided to go with them as the breeder that I was going to buy my miniature Highlands from. In the Fall of 2019, I flew into Detroit, rented a Chrysler Town and Country mini van, and drove up to Lakeport to meet Hans and pick up my new babies. After walking through their herd with them and asking ten thousand questions, I realized how much they loved each and every cow.

After I made my 34 hour drive back to Washington state and nearly ruined a brand new mini van, we got to enjoy our very own miniature highland cows.  It wasn't very long until we decided that we had lots of room on our farm and decided to buy a few more from Lakeport Miniature Highlands.  So in the fall of 2021, I repeated the trip. Once again, I walked through Hans and Sheril's herd, learning everything I could.  Noticing how friendly and docile every cow was, even the bulls, I couldn't wait for my own herd to start growing.  Lakeport Miniature Highlands prided themselves on responsible breeding practices, and not just breeding to produce a small cow, but a small healthy, and friendly cow.  I knew I wanted to be a part of that breeding program.

With the help from Lakeport Miniature Highlands, our herd has finally grown, and we can now watch our own calves run and play. After a long day on the hay farm, I must say it's almost therapeutic and a big stress reliever.
